Celebrate National Homebrew Day!

April 7, 2017

Homebrewers of the world unite!  It's time to celebrate! Gather all your beer-making and beer drinking friends around the kettle and get to brewing.

For those of you who may not know...

In 1988, May 7 was announced before Congress as National Homebrew Day. The American Homebrewers Association (AHA) created AHA Big Brew as an annual event to celebrate National Homebrew Day around the world. AHA Big Brew is held each year on the first Saturday in May. This year it falls on May 6th!

To kick off the nationwide brew day there will be a simultaneous toast
at 1:00 p.m. ET, 12:00 p.m. CT on May 6, 2017! And yes if you are on the west coast you are required to raise your glass and toast with your IPA at 10:00 am. Too early for an IPA? Then have a coffee stout.

It is important to honor all those who enjoy their hobby of homebrewing all over the world.  Let's be honest we all benefit from having a friend or family member who homebrews.  And if you don't know a homebrewer but have ever been to a local microbrewery, well there you go.  Most brewers start out as a homebrewer.  Cheers to them all!

On May 6th hundreds of bars, breweries, shops and homebrew clubs nationwide will host their local communities to brew on-site for a national, same-day homebrewing session. A number of suggested recipes are selected for participants to follow.  Many homebrewers will tell you that everything you need to learn about brewing great beer at home can be found in one place; How to Brew by John Palmer. For Big Brew this year, the AHA is celebrating the upcoming publication of the 4th edition of How to Brew by providing three sample recipes from the book.

This year the recipes are:

  • Rushmore American IPA – All Grain, Extract

  • Battre L’oie Saison – All Grain, Extract

  • Klang Freudenfest Oktoberfest Lager – All Grain, Extract

You can find the actual recipes here.

If you are new to homebrewing and do not have the book How to Brew by John Palmer, you can download a free copy of Zymurgy: An Introduction to Homebrewing: AHA’s guide for the new brewer.  Access it here online or order a hardcopy by Friday, 4/27/17.

If you are not interested in homebrewing, but want to attend one of the many hundreds of Big Brew 2017 events happening nationwide, find an event here at the AHA Big Brew webpage.

For those of you in the SF Bay Area, like myself, I highly recommend heading over to Berkeley to Gilman Brewing Company for their Big Brew event.  They will be brewing an all grain batch of the Battre L’oie Saison and an extract batch of the Rushmore American IPA. So whether you are just getting interested in homebrewing or want to do more all grain brewing, they've got you covered. They will start brewing at 12:00pm.

An RSVP is required.  Send an email to Timothy S. to RSVP.
